Women and doctors often dismiss female issues because the symptoms are similar to symptoms of menstruation or other health conditions. Because of this, women are often misdiagnosed several times before being correctly diagnosed. They may suffer from infertility due to the scarring on their reproductive organs or treatment caused by their condition. They may also be diagnosed with late stage cancer.

SpeakGyno is about educating and bringing awareness to everyone about the many gynecological diseases and conditions out there and to encourage women to advocate for their own health care, to share their stories to empower other women, and to find care or next steps if they have been diagnosed with a serious condition.

This site is not a comprehensive list of all gynecological diseases and conditions out there; rather, it is bringing awareness to some common ones that have symptoms that can be misdiagnosed.

Gynecologist or primary care doctor?

Gynecology deals with the health of a woman’s reproductive system, including the vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts. Gynecologists are doctors that specialize in caring for women and their health and many times, gynecologists are also obstetricians, who care for women during their pregnancy.

A primary care doctor or a family doctor oversees chronic health conditions and coordinates care with other specialists that may include a gynecologist. Primary care doctors are also trained to see women for gynecological conditions.

Finding a doctor you trust is important in getting the care you need. When it comes to doctors, you can see a gynecologist or a primary care doctor for female conditions.
